Starting in 2025: Key Changes in Bus Passenger Transport in Kranj

The Municipality of Kranj is introducing significant changes to bus passenger transport with the new year. The most notable innovation is digital payment, which will simplify the use of the city’s public transport network.

Digital Payment on 11 City Bus Lines

Digital payment will be implemented on 11 city bus lines (routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11A, 11B, 14, and 15), bringing Kranj in line with many European cities that have modernized public transport, resulting in fewer delays and an improved passenger experience.

From the new year onwards, cash payments to drivers will no longer be possible. Passengers will use IJPP tickets or payment cards such as CeKR, Mastercard, Visa, and BA Maestro. Upon boarding, passengers will validate their payment card but will be charged for only one daily ticket, even if multiple transactions are recorded in a day. The daily ticket price remains 1 euro, and transactions will be automatically processed overnight.

Benefits for CeKR Card Users

Passengers using the CeKR city card will enjoy additional benefits, including a “fair fare system” that ensures the best ticket price. For example:

  • After purchasing 10 daily tickets within a month, these will automatically convert into a monthly pass.
  • After purchasing 100 daily tickets within a year, passengers will receive free rides for the remainder of the year. This validity applies from the first validation of the month until the end of the same month the following year. (For example, if the first ticket is purchased on January 6, 2025, the annual pass will remain valid until January 31, 2026.)

The CeKR card can be reloaded online, via cash payments using UPN forms at banks and savings banks, and soon at the reception office of the Municipality of Kranj (MOK). Passengers can also purchase daily tickets in cash at the main bus station.

Transition Period Until March 1, 2025

The municipality has announced a transition period lasting until March 1, 2025:

  • Holders of the Arriva card with annual passes can use them until February 28, 2025.
  • Monthly passes on the Arriva card will remain available for January and February 2025.
  • After the transition, passengers must obtain the CeKR city card. Unused balances on the Arriva card will be refundable at the Kranj Bus Station.

Changes on Intercity Lines

On intercity routes connecting Kranj with Podreča, Podblica, Žabnica, and Golnik, the Arriva card will remain valid during the transition period, offering the same benefits as the CeKR card. Cash payments will also be accepted, and passengers will receive printed tickets and evidence slips when transferring. Prices will remain 1 euro for a daily ticket and 10 euros for a monthly ticket. Monthly ticket holders on these routes can also use city buses without restrictions.

Free and Discounted Rides for Children

  • Children under 6 years can ride city buses for free throughout the year.
  • Children aged 6 to 15 years can purchase discounted monthly or annual passes at half the price of comparable regular tickets. These tickets will be valid on both the CeKR and Arriva cards (during the transition period) and will cover the entire municipality of Kranj.

These changes reflect the Municipality of Kranj’s commitment to enhancing public transport convenience, affordability, and quality.
